ABOUT US
The name MIRA+ was created by combining the words MedIa expeRience + educAtion, two areas that are central to our research group.
Our research has two main foci: media experiences in the daily life of children, youth and adults + media education and media literacy. We are interested in general media habits but also specific kinds of dealing with media like fandom or active participation in society. Such media activities are closely connected with informal learning through, with and about media. Hence, we are also interested in questions of media literacy and media education.
Media experience is always connected to various phenomena and media activity in a mediatized world is interconnected and dynamic. Therefore, our view on active media audiences is multi-perspective, interdisciplinary (connecting theories from media and communication studies, media psychology, media sociology, media education etc.), and forward-looking. This gives the + to our approach on media experience.
The following topics and fields of research are addressed by our research group: audience studies (fandom, celebrities); media and socialization (media habitus, media generations, media and migration); participation through/with media (political and social/societal participation, intergroup communication on social media); crisis and the media (climate change, pandemic, war); media literacy (risks and opportunities of media use); media education (parenting and parental mediation, learning with/through media)
We are part of the Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism.
